Why Is Everyone Flocking Down South?
It’s a well-known fact that birds find themselves flocking down south every winter, mostly due to the weather. And it would seem that many of us are doing exactly the same in 2021 and thousands of people will be in a new home of their own once the clocks have gone back.
A recent survey has revealed the top 10 most popular areas of the country that people are moving to based on an analysis of government data from June 2021. Factors such as net migration rates, age brackets of movers and number of transactions completed have all been taken into account.
Of the top 10, five of the areas are in the south of England – Hampshire, Devon, Kent, Cornwall and West Sussex. Norfolk, Essex, Derbyshire, Warwickshire and Lancashire make up the rest of the list. But why is everyone flocking down south?
Education
The five southerly areas have a lot to offer – not least universities. A large number of 15-19 year olds have moved to the university cities of Exeter in Devon and Canterbury in Kent. Exeter has one of the best sports science courses in the country and Canterbury offers a range of healthcare degrees. Students can enjoy exploring the city’s cathedrals when they’re not studying or partying. A huge number of people aged 35 or under have also moved to Hampshire, with many joining the universities at Southampton, Portsmouth and Winchester.
Retirement
Spending your retirement in paradise is not just a dream for some people, it’s becoming a reality. East Devon especially has a net migration rate of 2,500 people and according to the data, most people who move there are 50 or over. With its beaches, stunning scenery and bustling cities, the county has a lot to offer. Cornwall has also experienced an influx of people in their early to mid 70s moving down to spend the last years of their lives in a beautiful part of the world.
Work
Kent is a county that stretches from the edge of London down to the coast making it a desirable commuter town. The majority of people moving to Kent are young adults aged between 20 and 24. In most cases they are first time buyers looking at getting on the property ladder. Some companies have introduced long-term working from home or hybrid working systems and some people have even moved down to Devon or Cornwall as they no longer need to live near their workplace.
