How To Pack Christmas Decorations For A Move
When you move house, chances are you’ll have to pack Christmas decorations along with your furniture, television, clothes and toys. But there’s an art to making sure your baubles don’t smash or your tinsel doesn’t get ripped to shreds.
So how do you do it? Should you be using newspaper to wrap your decorations? What sort of boxes should you be using? We answer the all-important questions in our latest CBS Removals blog.
That’s a wrap…
You should wrap items individually. And if you’re handling Christmas decorations, this is a golden rule you should follow whether it’s baubles, small figures or other such ornaments. Paper will be your best bet for much of the wrapping (surprisingly). Make sure there are no gaps between items either so they can’t move about in transit. Used correctly and on the right materials, blankets (and bubblewrap according to some movers) can be used too. We’ve produced another handy guide with more information in about materials.
Read all about it…
Newspapers are not just for reading. Once you’ve digested the day’s news and completed all the puzzles, you can make use of it for your move. You can use it to line your boxes, but because of the risk of ink running, you should put another layer on top. That way, you don’t run the risk of marking your precious decorations. It goes without saying that the more layers of protection your items have, the less likely they are to get broken.
Thinking inside the box…
Using the right type of cardboard boxes is critical. Something flimsy will fall apart and you run the risk of smashing up your precious items. Double wall corrugated boxes are your best bet for moving in general, but you can use large sturdy plastic boxes for decorations too as they are more robust. But again, be smart when packing and wrapping your decorations so you don’t get a nasty surprise when you set up the tree in your new home.
Don’t get in a tangle…
There’s an art to packing Christmas lights too, not least because of the wiring involved. Before you pack them, you should untangle them. Some movers suggest wrapping your lights around a cardboard tube and use cable ties to secure the ends. They also recommend protecting the bulbs by popping your wrapped lights in a resealable plastic bag with some extra padding. If you follow those steps, you’ll be able to light up your new home in style.
